I still remain angry!
Music is often interpreted as protest, irrespective of the composer’s actual intentions. During my Corona times I composed “Ich will zornig sein” [I want to be angry] without any political thoughts. But today it sounds like a protest song, and there are unfortunately many reasons to be angry. Instead of marching in protest I express my anger through music: the nine stories in Thomas Bernhard’s “Auf der Erde in der Hölle” [On Earth and in Hell], published in 1957. His anger and sadness hit me so hard I still feel them today. 66 years ago, Thomas Bernhard prophesied catastrophes of climate, church, and war. And I still remain angry.
